more info:

if I do a describe keybindings I see no definitions for the umlaut chars 
which I see on a jed running on an old REDHat-system, like:

¢                       self_insert_cmd
£                       self_insert_cmd
€                       self_insert_cmd
¥                       self_insert_cmd
and so on ...

where do those come from ?
