I would agree that it's xjed to qt since all the targets that I've had
trouble with are KDE (and thus QT) apps.  Going the other way from KDE
apps to xjed works fine.  Given the 3/4 character limit I'd almost
suspect it's a case of pointer vs. buffer confusion somewhere.

Also I checked out the xsession error log and found the following
complaints (this is just a partial sample) from klipper and konsole
which seem to be produced any time I try to cut & paste more than 3
characters from xjed into a konsole.  The errors are all the same only
the application name changes...
