My guess is that if you do:
    ldd `which jed`
you will see it is linked to 1.4.8.  When you installed slang, you
need to do:
    make elf
    make install-elf
    ldconfig
Also, it may be a good idea to put /usr/local/lib in /etc/ld.so.conf
before running ldconfig.
