This sounds like a CR/NL problem.  Are you editing the file on a linux
system?  Does the file have lines that end in CR or CR/NL?  When you
edit the file with jed, does a C or L show up near the left edge of
the buffer's status line?  If so, which one?  I suspect that at least
on of the lines has a line that ends in CR.  If my suspicion is
correct, how significant is the embedded CR.
Finally, if you see a 'C' on the status line, then do
   ESC-x toggle_crmode
