Hmm... Ok, it seems that I'd downloaded a new cua-mode from
jedmodes.sf.net for testing a while back (I normally use emacs
bindings, so this is a bit like shooting in the dark). Perhaps
upgrading to that might help?

I not, here are a few questions that might help with tracking this
down: Does this behaviour happen with any other sorts of files? Does
the "*traceback*" buffer contain anything after opening a makefile?
What happens if you manually start makemode with "m-x make_mode"?
