It is not possible to use jed/slang1 for unicode unless you use the
UTF-8 hacked version of slang1. However, I do not recommend that
because the UTF-8 patches are known to cause random SEGVs in jed and
slrn.
At the moment, I am using a UTF-8 aware version of jed which I want to
release sometime soon. Of course, it requires slang2.
