xjed B0.99.17-80 and utf-8

Hi,

I downloaded the newest snapshot of jed and slang2 and installed them.
But I am having difficulties in entering and displayutf-8 umlaut-chars.

LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 xjed textwith_utfchars.txt

displays the the "zurück" as "zur<C3><BC>ck" if I select or highlight 
it, it is displayed as "zurück".

This is on debian linux. Any pointers where I could learn more about 
xjed and utf-8 and linux are welcome.
