jed B0.99.17-82 and utf-8

I am still not getting UTF-8 chars in jed

if I start uxterm and do a:

cat /usr/local/slang-pre2-r7/utf8/testfiles/UTF-8-demo.txt

I get the correct character display. But with

jed -n -e emacs /usr/local/slang-pre2-r7/utf8/testfiles/UTF-8-demo.txt

I get all utf-chars displayed as two byte hexcode.

Any tip what might cause this is welcome, or where I can debug what font 
jed is using.
