It works for me using slsh linked to 1.4.9.

 $ slsh --version
 slsh version 0.7-0
 S-Lang Library Version: 1.4.9
 $ cat /tmp/foo.sl

 #<TAG>
         - start embedded text region
 #</TAG>
 message ("foo-loading");
 $ slsh /tmp/foo.sl
 foo-loading

It was broken in an early pre-release version of slang2.
