I can't tell about the 'U' in the status line because I have configured the status line to not show the version.
But:
1. opening a UTF-8 file shows non-ASCII the right way and I am able to input it, too.
2. I did not force jed into UTF-8 mode by some variable in my .jedrc.
But my locale is of UTF-8 style (so jed should enable UTF-8 by itself) and I
feel xjed does so (see my other post). So I think jed will do so, too.
