Hi John,
here's a more detailed answer:
1. My system is:
Debian Sarge x86
linux 2.6.11
SLang 2.0.6 compiled from source
jed-B0.99-17.165
XOrg 6.8.2 compiled from source
jens@knusper:~$ echo $LANG
de_DE.UTF-8@euro
2. Yes, %v in the status line shows a trailing 'U'.
3. slang-2.0.6/utf8/testfiles/UTF-8-demo.txt
Most things are displayed correctly, some just show a box. I guess this
is just a font problem, as box test, greetings, russian, greek, parts of
math and the 'nicer typography box' display ok.
Using a bigger font for the xterm, everything except the last greeting
is displayed correctly.

7. I tried to search again, result seems different now:
I opened slang-2.0.6/utf8/testfiles/UTF-8-demo.txt.
Entered some umlauts into it, moved above them. Searched for a
"u (u umlaut). Display in minibuffer is:
A~ 1/4 not found.
+- -+-
| |
| +- displayed as one character
+------ displayed as one character (capital A with ~ above)
I really hope that this and the xjed input problem can be solved. Without
xjed, UTF-8 is unusable for me.
Best regards,
Jens
