SLUTF8_MAX_MBLEN undeclared

I'm trying to compile JED 0.99-18 on a box running CentOS 4.3.  I'm 
getting an error on compile:

/root/jed-0.99-18/src/misc.c
/root/jed-0.99-18/src/misc.c: In function `jed_ungetkey_wchar':
/root/jed-0.99-18/src/misc.c:744: error: `SLUTF8_MAX_MBLEN' undeclared 
(first use in this function)
/root/jed-0.99-18/src/misc.c:744: error: (Each undeclared identifier is 
reported only once
/root/jed-0.99-18/src/misc.c:744: error: for each function it appears in.)

Has anyone else run into this?  What do I need to change for it to 
compile?  I checked the archives and couldn't find mention of it.

I have been able to compile earlier versions of JED without issue.
