Strange, it works for me.
Or did you try setting before setting the editor mode (eg, emacs)?
% ~/.jedrc
if (BATCH == 0) {
% ...
() = evalfile("emacs");
% ...
}
set_status_line("(Jed) %b (%m%a%n%o) %l/%L(%p)%c",1);
% ...
/mark
