I can't follow you. Jed's folding uses the function set_line_hidden().
This doesn't need any hardcoding in the text. Try the function
set_selective_display(). It hides all lines having a greater indent than
the current line.

If you talk about markers {{{ and }}}, I don't like them, too. But they
are an incapability of the modes. In my LaTeX mode, I used the in text
boundaries like \begin{…} and \end{…}. Yes, I think it's worth to teach
the modes (like the C mode) to automaticly fold between braces and the
like.

The softwrap is a feature that needs to be done in jed's core.

Caution with such speculations. If you trust these numbers [1], the pure
terminal version is installed six times more frequently than the X Window
version. I can't believe these numbers, too.
