As it comes with Ubuntu xjed is pretty ugly, but following a hint in the doc directory I put the following in /usr/local/bin as 'j' and made it executable:
xjed -fn mono -fs 14 $* &
This gives a nice looking anti-aliased X application, and the color schemes for xjed are much easier on the eyes.
