Hello Mike,
If you are referring to jed in the Linux text console,
you cannot use Alt-Left, Alt-Up and so on. Or you would
have to modify the console keymap - and expect trouble.
If you are using jed in a graphic terminal (e.g. xterm),
first find out whether the key combo of your choice
goes through to the editor: there are so many hijackers
on the highway. They may want the shortcut that you want.
Press at the terminal prompt ctrl-v then the combo.
You will see the keystring to use in jed. As an example,
for Alt-Left I get ^[[1;3D.
