This is true.
In fact, I often do not use X11 (or any other GUI) at all.

All applications I know must name the file before writing or reading data
to or from disk.

Every application must be patched to use it, wheras my zz can be used by
every application with a shell interface - like jed.
But zz is limited to one account, whereas xx can be used across accounts
AND hosts - all over the internet!
