An interesting question! I used the following script for "benchmarking":
> $ cat ./100_jed
#!/bin/sh
for i in `seq 100`
do jed -batch > /dev/null
done
Without precompiled library files, I get the following times:
> $ for i in `seq 5`; do /usr/bin/time -f "elapsed: %e user: %U system: %S" ./100_jed; done
elapsed: 0.99 user: 0.81 system: 0.17
elapsed: 0.95 user: 0.78 system: 0.17
elapsed: 0.93 user: 0.77 system: 0.16
elapsed: 0.96 user: 0.79 system: 0.17
elapsed: 0.92 user: 0.76 system: 0.16
After running
> $ jed -batch -n -l preparse
I get slightly shorter times (~1.5 ms per single jed startup):
> $ for i in `seq 5`; do /usr/bin/time -f "elapsed: %e user: %U system: %S" ./100_jed; done
elapsed: 0.85 user: 0.66 system: 0.18
elapsed: 0.80 user: 0.62 system: 0.17
elapsed: 0.78 user: 0.61 system: 0.17
elapsed: 0.79 user: 0.61 system: 0.17
elapsed: 0.79 user: 0.62 system: 0.17
So yes, I can see a difference... ;-)
But is it worth the effort? Maybe not...
Cheers,
Manfred
