On Debian Sarge
/lib/libslang.so.1.4.9 is the plain one and that's the one you used
/lib/libslang.so.1-UTF8.4.9 is the patched one
slrn is linked vs. plain slang.
If you have the slang1-dev package installed then your compiled programs
will use the plain slang; you'd need the slang1-utf8-dev package (which
conflicts with a lot of other dev packages -- SDL, aalib, etc) for the
patched one.
