FWIW, as a form of regression testing I periodically use SLIRP to construct
a module for MySQL v3.2.3.49 on Debian 3.0 (Woody).
The result contains only automatically generated functions (about 50 in
all), and so is nowhere near as useful as Jeremy's version (which I believe
also contains additional hand-crafted wrappers and supporting code).
Still, it compiles in a blink or two with gcc 2.95.4 and is able to
init/connect/ping a server.
