I will add -lz to the Makefile for the next release. FWIW, debian
sarge does not have this problem because of the way zlib was built and
installed:
# ldd /usr/lib/libpng.so.2
libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x4002c000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x4003e000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x40061000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x80000000)
