You are correct.  Fortunately, there is another way to achieve grab
the output.  Instead of `script`, use, e.g.,
   /path/to/your/slsmg/program > /tmp/xterm.log
Of course, you will not be able to see what is happening on the
display.  For that `tee` can be used:
   /path/to/your/slsmg/program | tee /tmp/xterm.log
