I know of the patch. However, some of reasons I have not incorporated
it into slang are that it breaks binary compatibility, and the patch
does not go far enough as far as the interpreter is concerned. That
is, the interpreter should have a seamless interface to UTF-8 encoded
strings. Practically speaking, since jed currently has no built-in
support for multi-byte characters, I see no advantage to linking the
editor to the UTF-8 version of slang.
Regarding unicode, slang v2 will have complete support for UTF-8 ---
everywhere, not just in the display routines. Once that is available,
I will have to make many changes to jed's internals to support
multibyte characters. Of course then we will have to deal with issues
such as the character set associated with a file. For most US users
this will rarely be an issue, however for others using, e.g., an
iso-latin character set, something as simple as á will no longer be
represented by a single character.
