slang regexpressions, word-chars

Experimenting with re-search functions, I came across a problem:
 
The regexpt section of the "Guide to the SLang language" (slang-18.html)
describes the special patterns
   \<                Match the beginning of a word.
   \>                Match the end of a word.

Now my question arises: Can I change the definition of word-chars, and if
so, how.

(BTW The slang function define_word doesnot help here.)
