This works for me too (as I'm using Debian and jed0.99.16 as well) but
before realizing that I had in .bashrc
# if DISPLAY is set, assume X is running
if [ $DISPLAY ] ; then
echo "bashrc: X is running"
export EDITOR=xjed
export BROWSER=konqueror
else
echo "bashrc: X is not running"
export EDITOR=jed
export BROWSER=elinks
fi
together with
alias jed=$EDITOR
it should do the trick...
