I put that in my .Xdefaults file:

Now I don't get only the two byte codes like <C3><BC> for ü displayed.
my settings are:
locale charmap
UTF-8

If I do a cat of the file in question I get the correct display.
But if I run jed the umlaut chars are displayed as two bytes

how can I check what font jed is using ?
