Actually, most modes on Jedmodes are not yet ready for UTF-8. They might
work by chance but up to now I did not any successfull tests.
I am eagerly waiting for the 0-99.18 Debian package, as it fixes an UTF-8
problem that leads to malfunction of get_word() from txtutils.sl --- the
base of many modes and functions.

Unfortunately, I do not understand this. Could you produce a unified diff
with the shell command
diff -u <old-ispell-init.sl> <your-ispell-init.sl>

As we might be looking back at this mail later (it is archived), giving
the version in numbers might be better.
What version of ispell are you using?
(My version of ispell-init.sl has on line 51:
public variable Ispell_Options = Assoc_Type [String_Type, ""];
