Turning a buffer into read-only

I sometimes split the screen into two buffers. One which I'm "copying"
from and one that I'm editing.
To prevent from getting myself confused I often change the mode of the
one I'm reading from but is there a command to make it read-only to
prevent me from accidentally editing something without noticing it.
