I asked these questions directly to John, and here are
his answers. Anybody has pointers on where to dig in the
code to "fix" these things?

Why is this the default? Where could one look to disable
this behavior, or to leave it as an option?

Any hints? Of course, it would be nice to be able to do this
key detecting from Win32, Linux, etc.
