Are you using UTF-8?  Does a U appear immediately following the
version number on the status line (e.g, pre0.99.20-12U)?  If so, what
font are you using?  Does the problem persist with the font
"-Misc-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--20-200-75-75-C-100-ISO10646-1"?
